In a groundbreaking development, beloved characters created by Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, will soon be featured on legal tender collector coins. For the first time since Dr. Seuss Enterprises was founded in 1993, the organization has granted approval to depict these iconic figures on commemorative coins. This marks a significant milestone in the legacy of the Pulitzer Prize-winning author, whose work has captivated generations of children and parents alike.
Kevin Lipton Rare Coins, based in Beverly Hills, California, has secured the licensing agreement to produce the coins. Royalties from the limited-edition gold, silver, and base metal coins will be directed to Dr. Seuss Enterprises, which supports a range of charitable causes, including education, health, animal conservation, and the arts.
“Initial plans include coins dated 2025 featuring some of the most iconic characters from Dr. Seuss’s most beloved books, such as The Cat in the Hat, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, and Green Eggs and Ham,” said Kevin Lipton, head of Kevin Lipton Rare Coins. “This will be the first authorized use of Dr. Seuss’s characters on coins, a testament to the enduring legacy of his work.”
Dr. Seuss Enterprises was created to safeguard and promote the intellectual property of Dr. Seuss following the author’s passing in 1991. Geisel’s body of work includes more than 60 books, with over 600 million copies sold worldwide. His contributions to children’s literature were recognized with a Pulitzer Prize in 1984, awarded for his nearly half-century-long influence on the education and enjoyment of both children and adults.
In addition to his literary achievements, Geisel earned accolades across multiple artistic fields, including Emmy® awards from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 1978 and 1982 and Oscar® awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 1947 and 1951.
The Dr. Seuss commemorative coins will be struck by The Commonwealth Mint & Philatelic Bureau in the United Kingdom. Further details about the coin designs and their availability are expected to be announced later this year.
