William Barber Photo Found

March 14, 2019 by News Release

William Barber
William Barber was the fifth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1869 until his death. (Photo: Liberty Seated Collectors Club.)

The Liberty Seated Collectors Club and the Barber Coin Collectors’ Society are happy to announce the discovery of the fifth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, and designer of the Trade Dollar and Twenty-cent piece, along with many patterns and medals.

After working with two of the great-great-grandsons of William Barber (and great-grandsons of Charles Barber), a long-sought-after photo of William was found in the family archives. The family has generously agreed to have these clubs publish this new photograph (circa 1840s).
