eBay Expands Authenticity Guarantee to Collectible Coins

Great news for collectors: eBay has expanded its Authenticity Guarantee program to eligible collectible coins. Starting August 18, 2026, many high-value U.S. and world coins purchased on the platform will be professionally authenticated at no extra cost to buyers or sellers.

What’s Covered

Eligible items include:

  • Graded U.S. coins priced at $500 or more
  • Graded world coins (including Canadian) priced at $500 or more
  • Raw (ungraded) U.S. coins priced at $500 or more

Look for eBay’s blue Authenticity Guarantee badge on listings to identify eligible coins.

How It Works

When you buy an eligible coin, it ships to Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) for a multi-point physical inspection. Experts check authenticity, overall condition, and consistency with the listing description. Once authenticated, the coin receives a tamper-evident e-tag with a unique QR code on its protective packaging. You can scan the code to view details about the coin and its authentication. The item is then securely packaged and shipped to you.

For sellers offering returns, Authenticity Guarantee includes a verified return process: the coin goes back to the authentication center so experts can confirm it’s the same item in the same condition before it returns to the seller.

This expansion builds on eBay’s earlier Authenticity Guarantee for trading cards and deepens its partnership with Collectors (parent company of PCGS and PSA).

Why It Matters

Authenticity, condition, and grading are central to a coin’s value. eBay also introduced standardized condition guidelines for collectible coins in May 2026 to give buyers clearer information before they purchase. The new authentication service aims to increase confidence for both buyers and sellers in the higher-end market.

Coin activity on eBay continues to grow—searches for collectible coins rose more than 30% year-over-year (June 2025 to June 2026), and listings of historic coins increased more than 40% over the same period. Popular categories remain strong; collectors searched for pennies more than 2,500 times per hour on average in the first half of 2026.

Supporting the Hobby

Beyond authentication, eBay is investing in the numismatic community by:

  • Funding five scholarships in 2026 through the Professional Numismatists Guild (PNG) NextGen Scholarship Program
  • Serving as a key sponsor of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) World’s Fair of Money (August 25–29)
  • Sponsoring PCGS’s Young Numismatist event at the ANA show

As Adam Ireland, eBay’s VP and General Manager of Global Collectibles, noted: “Every coin has a story, and we’re making it easier than ever for collectors to buy and sell with confidence while helping preserve the integrity of one of the world’s oldest collecting hobbies.”

Stephanie Sabin, President of PCGS, added that the partnership “elevates and protects the hobby for everyone.”
