On November 9, the U.S. Mint is releasing a 2020-W 24-karat gold coin and a companion silver medal that celebrate the “Greatest Generation” — those who fought in World II, contributed to the war effort at home and, with victory, secured America’s freedom and economic strength. The coin and medal are being sold alongside the 2020-W V75 gold and silver Eagles in the Mint’s End of World War II 75th Anniversary Coins and Medals Program.
For both the coin and medal, Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) is offering its bold V-Day label for no additional fee by default. Coins and medals received by NGC within the first 30 days of their release are eligible for NGC’s popular Early Releases and First Releases designations and labels.
The 2020 End of World War II 75th Anniversary Silver Medal with the NGC Early Releases Designation and Label and the 24 Karat Gold Coin (holdered reverse up) with the NGC V-Day Special Label.
The dynamic obverse design was inspired by the Great Seal of the United States as it looked in 1945, with an eagle facing right toward the olive branch, which symbolizes peace. Here, the eagle, in flight, holds the branch in its right talon. The inscriptions 1945, LIBERTY and WORLD WAR II elegantly convey the significance of that year in history.
The coin and medal reverse borrows the sun device from the 1945 World War II Victory medal, but now the sun is shown high in the sky, shining on olive branches ripe with fruit. It was designed by Donna Weaver, a prolific U.S. Mint artist who signs certification labels exclusively for NGC. Learn more about her work here.
The 2020 End of World War II 75h Anniversary coin and medal are another low mintage release for the U.S. Mint. Only 7,500 of the gold coin will be released, and only 20,000 of the silver medal.
