Mystery Box Auction Lot Winning Bid Over $2,000

December 5, 2021 by David Crenshaw

Those of you who are “old-timers” will remember club member Bill Fivaz’s famous mystery box auction lot that he puts in a club auction every two to three years. Well, Fivaz announced at the November 20, 2021, club meeting that another one of his popular mystery boxes will be in the club’s December 4, 2021, auction.

Going once! Going twice!

Nine items with a total value far north of $1,000 are in a sealed box—no peeking inside allowed. The bidding began with no minimum. Fivaz guaranteed that if the total value of the items in the box is not acceptable to the winning bidder, he will either add more items or cash until the bidder is happy. Fivaz has only had to fulfill this guarantee once in the years of offering his mystery boxes.

There were several bidders including an out-of-state phone bidder, which is a testament to the lots popularly.

The winning bid for the lot was $2,100, which included

  1. A partial brilliant uncirculated set of Washington silver and clad quarters in an archival grade Dansco album. The album alone retails for $60
  2. A brilliant uncirculated 1945-P Mint set in a Capital holder
  3. Two private mints 1/10-ounce gold pieces
  4. A 11-piece brilliant uncirculated Wartime Nickel set with some pieces having full steps.
  5. A 7.1-ounce Jimmy Carter .999 silver inauguration medal
  6. A 1958, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1962, 1963 “B” Reverse quarters all graded PCGS MS-64
  7. A brilliant uncirculated roll of 1953-D quarters
  8. Over one-pound foreign silver figured at .500 fine
  9. A circulated 1-ounce 1996 American Gold Eagle

The total value of the items in the box was $3,336!

It Is Not An April Fools’ Day Joke

March 31, 2021 by David Crenshaw

This announcement could seem like an April Fools’ Day joke, but it is not. The City of Dunwoody recreation program coordinator Kate Borden announced on Monday, March 1, 2021, the Dunwoody North Shallowford Annex will re-open Thursday, April 1, 2021, under strict guidelines for events and programs.

North Shallowford Annex
The North Shallowford Annex is an indoor facility for Dunwoody Parks & Recreation programs and Dunwoody Police Department training.

The Metropolitan Coin Club of Atlanta meetings will resume at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, April 3, 2021, in Room #1.

The maximum group size of each meeting is limited to thirty (30) people. Stay home if you have tested positive for COVID-19, are waiting for COVID-19 test results, have COVID-19 symptoms, or if you have had close contact with a person who has tested positive for or who has symptoms of COVID-19. And stay at home if you are sick.

During the meetings, always adhere to the six-foot social distancing rule with people who do not live with you. Everyone is required to wear well-fitting masks that always fit completely over their nose and mouth. Greeting others with physical contact, for example, handshakes, is discouraged. Practice hand hygiene etiquette washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol and rub your hands until dry (provided in front of the Annex).

To help the Annex management with the unlikely need for COVID-19 contact tracing and to keep groups accountable for maintaining group size, attendees are required to provide their name and contact information.

The kitchen is closed. Refreshments are not allowed to be served.

At the conclusion of each meeting, all tables and chairs must be wiped clean. MCCA is responsible for its own cleaning supplies.

Since the group size is limited to 30 people, meeting pre-registration is required. The first 30 people to pre-register may attend the meeting. To pre-register for the Saturday, April 3, 2021 meeting, send an email with your name and contact information to MCCA president Tom Youngblood at tom.youngblood@att.net or call (770) 815-4042 no later than 12 noon Eastern Time, Friday, April 2, 2021.

MCCA Young Numismatist Authors New Book

November 28, 2020 by News Release

Early Date US Large Cent Rapid Attribution Guide Volume 1 cover

The Early Date US Large Cent Rapid Attribution Guide by a Metropolitan Coin Club of Atlanta young numismatist, Thomas Walker, is a new work carefully designed to help beginning and expert collectors alike with attributing early date large cents. The 186-page paperback is available from Amazon.com for $44.95.

It incorporates a novel approach including instantly recognizable diagnostics for many varieties, plates containing significant die states, and variety isolation flowcharts. Contained also within the book is an important discussion on the high-quality counterfeits plaguing early large cents with diagnostics clearly presented. All these tools use large pictures and large text to make using this guide easy on the eyes.

Using this guide, you will find yourself making attributions far more quickly. You will also find yourself remembering diagnostics much easier, which will give you a great cherrypicking edge. Much of the information in this affordable guide is not easily found outside of this book, with such information either being locked away in rare and expensive references or only gleaned from experience.

The first volume covers cents from 1793 to 1797, which is roughly half of all large cent varieties. The second volume, which will cover cents from 1798 to 1814, will come out in the first half of 2021. In addition, far more collectors deal with cents from 1798-1814 than those from 1793-1797, so breaking up the guide was a logical step in keeping the information within affordable and relevant to collectors.

Join host David Crenshaw and presenter John Phipps for the club’s inaugural educational webinar series. The webinars are in lieu of the club’s canceled meetings during these unprecedented times of the coronavirus pandemic and will be live the first and third Saturday each month at 7:00 p.m. ET if there are presenters.

Construction started in 1823. The building on this site has fallen victim to fires, earthquakes and wars. It has been rebuilt and renamed many times.
